Our next Evensong service will be Sunday, 11 February at 5:00pm. The choir will sing George Dyson's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D and Stanford's Beati quorum via. Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) is often credited with beginning a renaissance in music in the British Isles during the late 1800's. His music was the start of the English cathedral music that we think of today. His students included Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Ireland, Herbert Howells, and George Dyson. While Stanford often lamented that his students varied too far from his Brahmsian precepts, I think that you will see that George Dyson took his ideas and love of lyrical melodies and combined them with new harmonies that created beautiful and exciting music.
