8 March 2021

Next Sunday, March 14th, we will mark the first anniversary of Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris's death with prayers and preaching celebrating her life and ministry. We are joined in this commemoration by churches around the diocese and beyond.

In 1989, Bishop Harris became the first woman ordained a bishop in the Episcopal Church. In a recent letter, Bishop Alan Gates described her as "a courageous pioneer, an outspoken prophet, and an indefatigable champion of God's justice and witness to God's grace." Her preaching was rooted in a fierce faith in Jesus' promise of new life. As we begin a new chapter here at Parish of the Epiphany I am committed to claiming our call to follow Jesus and work for God's justice and mercy in this world. Our following of Jesus will always lead us more deeply into the life of this world, to the margins of our society, to listening to the oppressed, to learning across lines of difference, and working for a more just world. God's justice calls us to relationship, reconciliation, and redemption.

We are excited to welcome the Rev. J. Sierra Reyes, the rector of St. Luke's, Denver, who will be our guest preacher on Sunday, March 14th. Sierra is the first woman and person of color to lead St. Luke's, Denver in its 129-year history. Prior to accepting the call to St. Luke’s, she was the associate rector of Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia, the first house of worship established in the state of Georgia. She is an alumna of Agnes Scott College, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Reverend Sierra has been a visitor to Epiphany during her time at Harvard Divinity School--and we welcome her once again!

In preparation for our Sunday, March 14th, worship, the Rev. Thea Keith-Lucas shared with me one of her favorite memories of Bishop Barbara. She wrote:

What I remember best about Bishop Barbara is her wicked sense of humor, which cut right through any polite fiction or self-congratulation that threatened to get in the way of the Gospel. At a celebration of the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center, she said, "I call this camp 'Tom Shaw's insurance policy'. He thinks if he puts my name on a place for children I'll have to behave." I think Bishop Shaw was well aware that nothing could stop Barbara Harris from challenging the Church to become the source of love and liberation that Jesus calls it to be. May her witness inspire us to meet that challenge here at Parish of the Epiphany.

Reading Thea's words, I say: May it be so. Amen!

See you on Sunday,
Nick
