Epiphany Hosts Icon Workshop with
Dr. George Kordis

September 26 — October 1, 2022

I am very excited to invite you to join me in working with master iconographer, Dr. George Kordis, for this six day workshop, the first offered by Dr. Kordis in the Boston area.  Members of Epiphany have the opportunity to register from now until May 15, to be assured of a space before the class is opened to the public. The class will include only 15 students and registrants typically come from across the country.

As some of you know, I began studying iconography about twelve years ago, first working with a wonderful teacher and acrylic paint. About five years ago, I came across a workshop on Facebook with Dr. Kordis, who works in the medium of egg tempera. It has been my great good fortune to continue working with George over the years. He is an internationally known master iconographer, creating portable icons but also painting the interior of orthodox churches all over the world. George’s work reflects a contemporary approach to iconography, while remaining firmly grounded in the Byzantine tradition.  You can see examples of his smaller scale work here, and his work in churches here.

For a full description of the workshop, go here. If you have questions, I’d be happy to talk with you as well.

Christmas Fair 2022

The date of this year's Christmas Fair is Saturday, November 19! To make the Fair a success, we need many volunteers. While some have committed to Leadership roles, there are opportunities galore.

Co-Chairs are needed for 2023, so come and learn the ropes this year as interns. This year we need leaders for White Elephant and Children’s Activities. These are easier jobs with a friend! We also will need contributions to the Knit Table, the Bake Table, White Elephant, and to the Auction.

If you are new to the Parish, this is a great way to get to know others.  If the pandemic has kept you away, this is a great way to reconnect. The Fair really is a ton of fun, so, come and join the team. Please contact Sara Post with any questions.

Epiphany Welcome for Afghan Families Celebrating the End of Ramadan

Ihsanullah (R, standing) and one of his brothers from Virginia at a family picnic last week at Menotomy Rocks Park in Arlington. A second brother, one of Zahida's brothers, and many nieces and nephews, all from Virginia, joined the Rawans and their Hasanzai cousins to celebrate Eid. (Photo: Betty J Stone)

Voices in Pashto, Dari, and Arabic graced the hallways and spaces of Parish of the Epiphany on Saturday, May 7. Over 30 children and their 20 or so parents from seven Afghan households, sponsored by organizations from Waltham, Belmont, Arlington, Woburn, Somerville, and Winchester, attended an Eid al-Fitr celebration marking the end of Ramadan. Beginning early that morning, volunteers gathered to prepare side dishes and set up Hadley Hall, the Upper Parish Hall, and the Chapel.

Families attired in festive traditional clothes brought favorite dishes to go along with catered halal (Arabic for permitted, lawful) foods for a feast described by many as their favorite of the whole Ramadan season. Imam Mohammed Waris of Medford offered mid-day prayers in the chapel and spoke of the importance of this time of the year for Muslims.

Families exchanged phone numbers and names with newfound friends who shared the experience of fleeing Afghanistan in August 2021. While adults shared halwa dessert and tea, the children played in the Bishop Garden.  Our guests departed laden with leftover containers from the feast and goodie bags for the children.

Without the hard work and organization of the Children’s and Youth Ministry of Epiphany, Mission and Outreach, and Epiphany and WIRP volunteers, this festive celebration could never have taken place.  Find other ways to support our Afghan family and their resettlement here, or contact Rev. Bob Davidson,
