Dear friends,

Welcome to Camp Epiphany! If you've seen our outdoor spaces in the past week, you know what I mean. We've got canopy tents in the Cloister and more in the Bishop Woodland Garden. We've got strings of lights, "sit-upons," rolling carts, and moving easels. It's the season of outdoor ministry!

This past Wednesday we began a new (mostly outdoor) ministry called Midweek, and it was incredible! Dozens of parishioners joined in for an absolutely delicious dinner (Thank you Duane W and team!), and faith-driven programming for all ages. We learned scripture, sang songs, rang bells, and painted beautiful watercolor pictures. If you couldn't join us last week please put Wednesday, October 6 on your calendar, as we continue this laughter-filled time of being together.

This Sunday we begin Church School, in-person for the first time in over 18 months. I cannot wait to read stories, ask questions, build and create with our youngest parishioners again! See below for details.

Thank you to all who are working hard to make these offerings possible!

Peace,

Bryn

Church School Begins this Weekend

Please drop your child off in the Bishop Garden between 9:50 and 10:00am this Sunday. You'll need to sign them in and make sure our information is correct before you head to the worship service.

Important notes for parents and care givers:

Please have your child bring a mask. This is necessary for trips to the bathroom and if they are joining you for communion. Outside masks are optional, but if we are doing an activity where personal space seems dicey, we may want everyone to mask for those minutes.

When you drop off your child, please confirm with a teacher if your child is joining you for communion or remaining outside until the service ends. If your child is joining you for communion, please let us know where to find you (worship in either the sanctuary or in Hadley Hall).

If your child is remaining outdoors for quiet activities until the end of the worship service, please plan on coming directly to the Bishop Garden for pick-up at the end of the service, before joining fellowship time. Thank you.

You can find the Bishop Woodland Garden by the gate to the right of Hadley Hall and the kitchen, or you can come through the Cloister Garden and quickly jaunt through the hallway, down four stairs, and out the back door.

Please Register for Church School if You Haven't Yet

We couldn’t be more excited to start our new program year together! This fall we are offering two options for children’s Church School:

In-Person, Outdoor Church School on Sunday Mornings at 10am

Meet us under canopy tents in the Bishop (back) Garden! During our hands-on classes, we’ll hear Bible stories in creative ways, explore and make art, learn fun facts, and explore our own feelings and responses to these stories all within a loving and supporting community of teachers and children. We invite children in pre-K through 5th grade, as well as 6th graders as special helpers this year. Families can choose for their child to join them in the sanctuary for communion, or remain outdoors with teachers until the worship service ends.

At-Home, Family-Led “Church” School -- Anytime that Works for You!

At-home formation is family-centered and family-led. We’ll give you the same materials we’re using for in-person church school, as well as weekly emails with support like background information and questions to ask, and periodic paper mailings for your child. If in-person church attendance doesn’t work for your family this fall, or if your family wants to sit together through the entire church service, this is a great option!

Our curriculum, Storymakers, creatively retells stories from the Old and New Testaments through “zines.” Zines are a combination guide, magazine, and workbook. We're starting with a zine called The Stars, and we'll all dive into a journey with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Jacob. Have you wondered why we hear these names so often in church, and what they mean to us, now? Join us and we'll find out!

Youth: Ice Cream & Conversation with Nick

Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join Rev. Nick for ice cream on Sunday, September 26 at 3pm, in the church Cloister Garden. Nick really wants to hear your voices as Epiphany begins the process of hiring a full time youth minister. Please come, spend some time together, hear about the new position, and share your hopes for who and what it can be.

RSVP here please!

Outdoor Worship for All Ages: This Sunday, September 26 at 5pm

Please join us this Sunday in the Cloister Garden for a short, half-hour service of worship. ALL ages and all households are invited for this child-friendly, simple but meaningful time of singing, eucharist, creative prayer, and a homily. And, of course, popsicles.

Our Outdoor Worship schedule this fall is:

September 26

October 3 (Blessing of the Animals)

October 24

November 14

November 28

Sunday Fellowship: Bakers and Helpers Needed

As you may have noticed, treats have returned to the 11:15 fellowship hour, making our Sunday mornings even more hospitable! We would like to grow our team of enthusiastic bakers and shoppers. Would you be willing to take a Sunday this fall? Home baked treats are always appreciated, but we have a budget so purchased fruit or goodies are welcome, too.

If you can help out, simply pick a date on the sign-up genius or send Jane White a quick email. Most Sundays simply involve placing your platters of treats on the table provided at the beginning of coffee hour. Four Sundays (Ciderfest, All Saints’, Advent 2, and the pageant) ask for two people, because the job is a little bigger, and a server will likely be needed. The Diocese has issued food and drink guidelines, which place some limitations on what and how we can serve while the virus is still around us. Jane will share those once you have signed up. Thanks for helping out!

Communion Enrichment Program for Children in Second through Fourth Grade

This year Parish of the Epiphany will be offering a Communion Enrichment class designed to help children better understand the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. This class will be for children in grades 2-4, including those who began the program in 2020 shortly before the shut-down. If you're interested in learning more or having your child participate, please contact Bryn Hollenbeck. Once the group is formed, we will work together to choose our meeting time, format, and location.
