“My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.” Psalm 57:7
For nearly a century, music has been the crown jewel that feeds our hearts in worship at the Parish of the Epiphany; it speaks to us at the root of our souls. Our music program boasts a long-standing reputation of musical excellence that continues to serve God, our parish, Winchester, and the greater Boston Community with a rich variety of offerings — all within the Anglican tradition. In fact, many people tell us they were initially drawn to the Parish of the Epiphany because of the quality of our music and worship!
Epiphany’s music program continues a tradition begun almost a hundred years ago, when the paid choir of men and boys was larger than the choir at St. Paul’s Cathedral. It became an almost all-volunteer choir in the early 1930's, and has been entirely staffed by volunteers, under the direction of a professional leader, for the past thirty or so years.
The Parish Choir is comprised of highly committed volunteer singers, supported by a small number of professional staff singers, who offer the finest choral music in the Anglican tradition. Drawing from many periods in history and honoring current-day composers, we focus on music’s unique place in liturgy. We are a warm, friendly group, constantly striving for excellence, who are decidedly committed to serving Christ and our community with our musical offerings in regular rehearsal and worship.
The Parish Choir rehearses throughout the school year (September – May) on Thursday Evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm and sings choral evensong, funerals, weddings, and feast days. During the summer months of June, July and August we suspend Thursday rehearsals, but continue to sing in the form of a summer ‘pickup’ choir.
Our developing Chorister Program is based on the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) model. Our Choristers are in grades 3 – 12, and glorify God in our liturgies through the beautiful music found within the vast Anglican tradition. Epiphany is a member of the Royal School of Church Music and as a regular part of musical training.
We purposefully and intentionally integrate our Chorister Program within our Children’s Formation program on Sunday mornings. Children participate fully in our children’s worship, designed to raise our youth to wholly understand ‘those who sing, pray twice!’
The Choristers rehearse Thursdays during the school year from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, then they enjoy dinner together with all their parents at 6:30 pm. They sing on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. On the 2nd Sunday the rehearse at 9:00am with the Parish Choir in preparation for the 10:00 am Eucharist.
